Mag Drill vs Drill Press: Which Fits Your Work?

By John Morris · Updated 2026-09-07 · Research methodology

Choose between a mag drill and a drill press by deciding whether it is easier to bring the machine to the work or bring the work to the machine. A large fabricated steel assembly and a batch of small brackets create very different buying decisions. Start with those jobs before comparing motor ratings.

Start with the workpiece, not the motor

Write down the size, weight and shape of the parts you drill most often. For large installed steelwork, moving every part onto a shop machine may be impractical. For small components that can be secured in suitable workholding, a stationary setup may fit the workflow better. This is a workflow assessment, not a claim that either machine is universally more accurate.

Separate material cutting from machine attachment. A cutter that is rated for a material does not establish that a magnetic base can attach to that workpiece. Confirm both requirements before purchasing a portable machine.

Compare the actual capacity you will use

Annular capacity, twist-drill capacity and cutting depth describe different things. Evolution lists the S28MAG at 1-1/8 inch maximum annular diameter, 2 inches maximum cutting depth and 1/2 inch twist-drill capacity. The larger annular number is not permission to fit a twist drill of that size.

For a bench machine, check its own permitted tooling, arbor and workholding arrangement. Do not assume that an annular cutter can be clamped into any ordinary drill chuck. Ask the machine and cutter suppliers to confirm the complete arrangement when adapting equipment.

Price a usable setup

Put each proposal into the same worksheet: machine, required cutter or bit sizes, workholding, cutting lubricant, delivery and any approved adapters. A machine advertised with a large accessory count may still lack the one diameter needed for your drawing. Conversely, a suitable existing drill press may need only a correctly specified accessory purchase.

Consider space and changeovers as well as acquisition cost. If the shop already has reliable small-part workholding, replacing that system solely to gain portability may not improve the work. If long beams dominate the schedule, portability may be the deciding benefit.

  • Choose around the recurring job, not a rare maximum-size hole.
  • Keep unsupported materials and unusual mounting situations out of automatic recommendations.
  • Ask for a demonstration using representative material when the choice is close.

Make the final choice

Build two short job lists: work that clearly suits the present shop setup and work that cannot be accommodated conveniently. If the second list consists largely of suitable steel assemblies, investigate a mag drill. If it consists of awkward small parts, better workholding may deserve attention first. Neither purchase replaces the need to follow the exact machine manual.

Questions, answered

Can a mag drill replace every drill press?

No. Evaluate workholding, material, permitted accessories and capacity for each job; portability alone does not make it a universal replacement.

Is annular capacity the same as twist-drill capacity?

No. Manufacturers publish separate limits. Compare the specification for the actual tool you intend to use.

DEWALT DWE1622K

a corded two-speed option for buyers who need a 2-inch annular capacity without maintaining a battery fleet

A 2-inch annular cutter rating does not mean this drill accepts a 2-inch twist drill. It also does not turn the two fixed spindle speeds into variable speed. Do not copy specifications from DWE1622K-QS or other regional versions into a US purchase.

The newer permanent-magnet HMD904 is a distinct configuration, not a feature to assign to every HMD904. Likewise, swivel models have different weights and magnetic force figures. A product card should identify the exact configuration instead of combining the most attractive attributes across the range.
