What counts as a mag drill bit?
Most magnetic drills are designed around annular cutters, which cut a ring and leave a center slug. But “mag drill bit” is not a universal fit label: some exact machines can also use twist drills only with a manufacturer-approved chuck or adapter, and different annular systems use different retention and pilot arrangements.
Before buying, match the cutter to the machine’s documented interface and pilot system, then check permitted diameter and cutting depth. Use the Cutter Compatibility Checker to expose remaining questions; its shortlist is not a substitute for the exact machine and cutter manuals.
Write a five-field cutter order
Record the exact machine and holder, work material, hole diameter and rated depth, manufacturer-named shank family, and pilot part number. Then use the HSS versus carbide guide to check the material and operating range. If any field is unknown, keep the candidate unresolved rather than treating a nominal 3/4-inch shank or longer cutter as proof of fit.
