Annular Cutter Slug Not Ejecting: Pilot Pin Checks

Confirm the pilot's three jobs

Hougen documents three pilot functions: locate the hole center, carry coolant around the slug to the teeth and eject the slug after breakthrough. A wrong, damaged or binding pilot can therefore affect location, lubrication and ejection at the same time. Match the cutter part number, rated depth, arbor and exact pilot number rather than relying on appearance.

For the Evolution S28MAG and EVOMAG42, the retained official instructions require the pilot to move smoothly through the cutter bore during installation and warn that slugs can be hot and sharp. Photograph the packaging or markings if the installed pin cannot be identified safely; do not dismantle an unknown assembly to discover the part.

Identify the ejection system before troubleshooting

Do not transfer one brand's removal sequence to another mechanism. Hougen describes positive slug ejection in which retracted feed handles push the slug and cannot fully retract until it exits. Milwaukee's 2787/2788 manual instead describes a spring-loaded center pin and requires protection for people and property below the ejection path.

Record whether the slug remains after every hole, only at greater depth, after a pilot change, with one cutter or in layered material. Separate a retained slug from incomplete breakthrough. If the problem follows multiple layers, verify that the cutter uses the maker's required stack-cut geometry before blaming the ejection mechanism.

• Keep the cutter and pilot packaging together.
• Record any recent assembly or consumable change.
• Tell support whether the issue affects one cutter or several.

Clear the cause before the next hole

Use only the documented procedure for the exact drill and cutter. Milwaukee says not to remove its cutter while a slug remains because the slug can eject unexpectedly. Isolate power, keep hands out of the cutter and keep the possible ejection path away from people. Do not strike the pin or use the next hole as an improvised ejector.

Hougen identifies four checks when ejection becomes unreliable: lubricant or cutting fluid, dull cutting edges, chips inside the cutter and ejection-spring condition. These are inspection branches, not permission to alter a spring. If the exact manual's safe removal procedure is unclear or fails, stop and use manufacturer or authorized service support.

Before returning the assembly to work, resolve the cause and match any pilot or service part by number and application. A stronger spring, shortened pin or look-alike replacement can change the mechanism and is not a responsible shortcut.
