Measure the complete work area

Record available height, width and length around the intended hole. Then mark the HMD130's 4-by-9-inch base, obstructions beside it, access to the rear controls and a route for placing and removing the tool. Photograph or sketch the area with dimensions so a supplier can review the same constraints you are seeing.

Do not reduce the decision to 6-15/32 inches. That is the published overall machine height, not a manufacturer clearance allowance. Add the space needed to install the cutter and pilot, work the feed and retrieve or contain the slug. Provide the actual hole diameter, material thickness and orientation with the drawing.

Use the exact model revision

Use Hougen's current 6-15/32-inch height instead of the older 6-11/16-inch figure repeated by some listings. Confirm the model plate and current drawing for the exact unit being sold before using a fraction of an inch as a purchase decision.

When clearance is close, ask the seller for the model label and dimensional document, then verify with the manufacturer. Leave the result unresolved until those match. Buying first and hoping that a fraction of an inch disappears during setup is not a sensible fitting strategy.

Budget for the correct cutter system

Hougen’s comparison chart distinguishes the HMD130 bayonet-style cutter mounting from the 3/4-inch double-flat Weldon mounting used by several upright drills. A box of Weldon cutters already owned for another machine therefore does not establish direct compatibility with the low profile purchase.

RotaLoc Plus is the 5/8-inch bayonet, 1-inch-depth family emphasized by the HMD130 manuals. Hougen's current standard RotaLoc page also lists 3/4-inch-depth cutters for HMD130. Match the family, diameter, depth and pilot 17810; do not treat the shared RotaLoc name as proof that two cutter records are the same.

Adapter 17680 is documented for putting RotaLoc-family cutters into an appropriate drill with a 3/4-inch shank. It is not evidence that a standard Weldon cutter can be installed in the HMD130. Ask for a written accessory list when ordering a complete setup.

• Check that the required hole is within the low profile model’s capacity.
• Confirm cutter installation and removal access inside the proposed space.
• Include replacement cutters in the cost comparison.

Buy specialized clearance only when needed

The HMD130 feed handle can move from side to side; its manual also permits a 1/2-inch box wrench or ratchet with a 1/2-inch socket. That may address side access without changing the machine's published height. It does not authorize an improvised mounting arrangement or remove the requirement for a safety strap.

Compare a dedicated low profile machine with the permitted accessories available for equipment you already own. For one unusual repair, a correctly specified rental can be worth pricing before adding a specialized cutter inventory to the shop.
