Annular Cutter Care: Inspection, Storage and Resharpening

Clear chips only after the machine stops

Hougen's current FAQ closes a hole by turning off the motor, confirming slug ejection and clearing chips from the cutting tool and from around and beneath the magnet. Milwaukee's 2787/2788 manual adds a model-specific boundary: wait until the spindle stops, then use pliers to remove debris from the cutter and spindle without damaging the teeth. Neither source permits hands, gloves or a rag near a rotating cutter.

Treat a retained slug as a troubleshooting condition, not ordinary cleaning. The Milwaukee manual says not to remove its cutter while a slug remains because ejection can be unexpected. Isolate power and use the exact model's documented sequence rather than striking the pilot or using the next hole as an ejector.

Match lubricant to delivery method and orientation

Hougen separates three lubricant routes instead of calling them interchangeable. RotaMagic concentrate is mixed with water for a drill coolant system; Slick-Stik is applied inside and on the teeth and is identified for horizontal or overhead holes; RotaFoam is sprayed on before each hole. Hougen still says its drill coolant system gives the best results where that system and orientation apply.

Milwaukee gives a different exact-model rule for 2787/2788: HAWG WASH is recommended in the bottle for upright use, liquid cutting fluid is prohibited where it can enter the motor or switch enclosure, and only high-speed-cutting paste or spray is permitted for its vertical or overhead work. A product being liquid, water-based or able to pass through a hose does not prove approval for another drill, cutter, material or orientation.

If blue or brown chips, interrupted flow or rapid wear appear, stop and diagnose the complete setup. Hougen says blue chips can indicate either an obstructed coolant system or excessive pressure; color alone does not identify which one.

Inspect and label before returning tooling to service

Identify diameter, rated depth, shank family, cutter part number and matching pilot before storage. Inspect the teeth for visible damage and keep the pilot's identity with the cutter family. Milwaukee specifically calls for periodic inspection of cutter tips for loose or damaged tips; an uncertain tool belongs in quarantine, not in the ready set.

Separate ready tooling, cutters awaiting assessment and items sent for sharpening. Protect cutting edges from incidental contact and keep a dated note of the material, lubricant route and symptom that removed a cutter from service. A known-good spare for a frequently used exact size can reduce downtime, but a case full of look-alike diameters is not a compatibility system.

• Quarantine uncertain or damaged cutters.
• Record recurring jobs and wear observations.
• Confirm a suitable sharpening service before sending tooling.

Choose resharpening only when identity and geometry are known

Hougen offers dedicated resharpening equipment for specified cutter families and describes restoring the original tooth geometry. That supports using a suitable professional process; it does not justify touching up an unfamiliar cutter by eye.

Ask the service whether the exact cutter is suitable for resharpening and what condition or dimensional checks are required afterward. Compare the service and shipping cost with a replacement, allowing for downtime. Keep the returned cutter’s identity and assessment so it does not become an anonymous item in the wrong set. For production work, use your own completed-hole records to judge value instead of assuming every sharpened cutter delivers a fixed life.
