HSS vs Carbide Annular Cutters: Choose by Material and Machine

Hougen says standard HSS cutters handle about 80 percent of applications and reserves coated or carbide tooling for harder material or longer life in abrasive work. That statement is a manufacturer selection guide, not a promised life for a particular job.

For stainless core drilling, FEIN recommends carbide-tipped tooling, a cutting speed of 25 meters per minute and internal cooling lubrication. Keep that recipe tied to FEIN’s stainless application guidance; cutter diameter and the exact drill still determine the operating setup.

Compare exact cutter records

Hougen’s 12000-Series is hardened M2 HSS with a 3/4-inch double-flat shank; Copperhead is a separate carbide-insert family for abrasive and tough materials. Matching diameter alone does not make their pilots, depth options or operating requirements interchangeable.

FEIN product 63127744010 is a carbide-tipped HM ULTRA 35 cutter with a 3/4-inch straight shank, 35 mm cutting depth, 74.5 mm overall length and centering pin 63134998310. Preserve those exact labels: the source does not call its straight shank Weldon.

Make the machine pass the cutter

Hougen says carbide runs at a higher RPM than HSS, but that does not supply one universal RPM. Cutting speed, cutter diameter and the drill’s available settings must resolve to an approved operating point. If they do not, change the cutter or machine rather than improvising.

Then check the exact shank, retention, pilot, coolant path and permitted depth. Cutter material never overrides those fit questions. Compare complete systems with every required pin, holder and coolant component included.

• Compare identical diameters and depth ratings.
• Ask about the specific material, not just metal.
• Keep unsupported speed and service-life claims out of the budget.

Keep life claims inside their test conditions

FEIN says its referenced cutter can make up to 400 holes only under the stated optimum test conditions: 18 mm diameter, S235 steel and 20 mm material thickness. Do not transfer that number to stainless, another diameter, another depth or another machine.

For occasional work, buying the correct individual diameters may matter more than chasing maximum theoretical life. A large set with unused sizes ties up budget that could have bought a second cutter for the size used every day. Before sharpening, confirm whether a suitable service can restore that exact cutter geometry.
