When it belongs on your shortlist

Compare the actual hole schedule with the lower-capacity model first. The HMD905's 2-inch annular rating is useful for jobs exceeding 1-1/2 inches; its lower speed also creates a different selection choice. Neither feature proves it will finish every smaller job faster. Consider carrying weight, available height and the cutter manufacturer's speed guidance together.

A shop moving from smaller holes into larger fabrication work should identify how many jobs exceed the existing machine's capacity. Occasional oversized holes may justify a rental comparison; regular work may justify ownership. Include cutter purchase and service access in that decision. A drill capable of the diameter is only one component of a practical holemaking setup.

The limitation to check first

Hougen lists the standard machine at 35 pounds and swivel version at 38 pounds. Swivel movement is an alignment feature, not permission to drill on an inadequately supported surface. A Fabricator's Kit and a basic machine also have different accessory contents despite sharing the HMD905 name.
