Hougen HMD905: Fixed, Swivel & Fabricator Kit Differences

Start with the four HMD905 package codes

Unlike the HMD904 matrix, every current HMD905 row on Hougen's page includes a coolant bottle. Swivel and cutter-kit status still vary. All listed drills include a carrying case, pint of coolant, safety chain and hex wrenches; the Fabricator's Kits add a 1/2-inch chuck, adapter and 12002 cutter kit.

A marketplace title that says only HMD905 does not settle whether the base swivels or whether the extra chuck and cutters are in the box. Match the part number and included-equipment list before assigning value to an offer.

Use diameter and speed as the upgrade gates

HMD905 covers annular diameters from 7/16 to 2 inches and 2-inch depth, with 250 and 450 RPM gears. HMD904 and HMD900 stop at 1-1/2 inches and list one 450 RPM speed. Those are decisive differences only when the actual hole and approved cutter need them.

HMD905 is also taller and heavier: Hougen lists 22-13/16 inches and 35 pounds for the fixed machine, versus 18 inches and 30 pounds for standard HMD904 and 15-1/8 inches and 27.7 pounds for HMD900. Check available height and carrying needs before buying unused capacity.

Swivel solves alignment, not attachment or capacity

Hougen documents a 1-inch-wide by 3/4-inch-long swivel area and a one-stroke lock. The swivel version weighs 38 pounds, three more than the fixed machine. The mechanism helps align the pilot after placing the magnetic base; it does not expand the 2-inch cutting envelope or approve a marginal surface.

The product page publishes different holding-force figures for fixed and swivel magnets. Do not copy the fixed-base number onto a swivel offer or treat dead-lift figures as a lifting rating. Hougen's broader guidance still calls for a clean, suitable surface and safety chain.

Choose HMD900, HMD904 or HMD905 by the first failed gate

Choose HMD900 when the 1-1/2-by-2-inch envelope and one 450 RPM speed fit and the compact 27.7-pound body is the useful tradeoff. Choose an HMD904 configuration when the same cutting envelope plus its pilot light, positive slug ejection, coolant/swivel choices or wider accessory path solves the job.

Choose HMD905 when the work genuinely needs its 2-inch diameter or lower 250 RPM gear. Then decide fixed versus swivel and machine package versus Fabricator's Kit. This sequence prevents a bundle name from hiding the capacity decision.
