Mag Drills on Steel, Stainless and Aluminum: Two Checks
A magnetic drill purchase involves two independent questions: can the selected tooling cut the material, and can the machine be secured using a documented arrangement? Passing the first test does not answer the second. Keep that distinction explicit when comparing steel, stainless steel and aluminum applications.

Start with a material description
Record the grade, thickness, coating and shape of the workpiece. The word steel covers too many situations to serve as a complete specification. A clean flat plate, painted assembly and curved component require different attachment assessments even when the planned hole diameter is identical.
If material identity is uncertain, do not let an online selector silently assume ordinary mild steel. Ask the material supplier or responsible fabrication lead to establish what is present. The same information helps the cutter supplier recommend the appropriate tooling.
Assess attachment separately
Hougen’s application guidance emphasizes surface condition and sufficient steel thickness for magnetic attachment. Aluminum is not a direct magnetic mounting surface. Stainless applications also require a specific attachment assessment; do not assume a stainless label establishes adequate holding.
Use only a documented mounting solution approved for the exact machine and workpiece. Do not improvise a backing arrangement from a generic internet tip. If no suitable arrangement has been established, a different drilling setup may be the appropriate choice.

FEIN’s stainless-steel drilling guidance recommends carbide-tipped core tooling, suitable speed control and internal cooling lubrication for that application. It is a material-specific reference, not a universal speed setting for every annular cutter or portable drill.
For aluminum and other materials, obtain the cutter manufacturer’s recommendation for the exact alloy and job. Check that the machine can provide the permitted operating conditions. Choosing a cutter advertised for multiple metals does not bypass either the attachment assessment or the machine instructions.

Give the supplier a complete question
A useful inquiry includes the machine model, material grade, thickness, hole diameter, number of holes and mounting orientation. Include a photograph or dimensioned sketch where access or surface shape matters. Ask separately for the tooling recommendation and the approved mounting arrangement.
If either answer is missing, keep the recommendation conditional. A buying guide should help you identify a workable system before you spend money, rather than presenting all metal-cutting claims as equivalent. For ongoing production, retain the confirmed setup and record any changes in materials or tooling that require another review.
