Mag Drill Steel Thickness: Why the Base Specification Matters
Minimum steel thickness is a model-specific mounting requirement. It is not the same as the maximum depth the cutter can drill, and it cannot be replaced by an advertised magnetic-force number. Check the base requirements for the exact machine before treating a workpiece as suitable.

Keep mounting and cutting limits separate
A machine may be able to cut a hole through a certain thickness while still needing a suitable supporting surface for its magnetic base. These are different parts of the setup. Record the plate thickness under the whole base as well as the thickness at the intended hole.
Hougen’s general FAQ gives 3/8 inch as its minimum steel-thickness guidance. That is a manufacturer reference, not a universal limit for every machine sold as a mag drill. Use the exact model manual and any more specific manufacturer instructions when planning the job.
Look beyond thickness alone
Hougen identifies coatings, contamination, curvature and incomplete base contact as conditions that reduce holding. A sufficiently thick piece does not automatically resolve those other conditions. Describe the surface as it exists rather than selecting a drill from nominal material thickness alone.
Where paint, shape or access prevents the required contact, seek a manufacturer-approved solution for the actual machine and workpiece. Do not treat an extra piece of scrap or a stronger advertised magnet as an automatically acceptable correction.

Ask what material and contact conditions support the stated magnetic-force figure. Without that context, the number is a weak basis for comparing suitability for your job. It is especially unhelpful when two sellers report force differently or omit the conditions entirely.
Likewise, an indicator or protective feature should be understood through its instructions. Do not infer that a lit indicator approves every aspect of the setup. Required restraints, permitted orientation and the workpiece assessment still belong to the exact machine procedure.

- Identify coatings, contamination and curved surfaces.
- Resolve unsupported mounting before choosing a cutter.
Ask for a documented decision
Send the supplier the machine model, material grade, thickness, surface condition and a sketch of the proposed base location. Include hole size and orientation. Ask whether the arrangement is permitted and which accessories, if any, are specified.
If the answer remains uncertain, another drilling method or a different fixture may be appropriate. A shopping guide should make that uncertainty visible. Buying a larger motor or a deeper cutter does not solve a missing attachment specification. Keep any confirmed mounting instructions with the job documents so future work does not rely on an incomplete memory of what was approved.
